I came across the following picture on the internet somewhere once, and it is definitely my favourite.
I presume it was taken in the final quarter of the nineteenth century, but have no idea who took it. When I found it, the photo wasn't credited. (If anyone knows who did, put it in the comments and I'll add it in.)
Anyway, I decided I'd try to replicate the shot in the current day, just to offer a literal snapshot as to how things have changed over the past 125 years or so. Here are the results:
While the
original photo depicts a village at its peak - indeed, the centre of the
jute-producing world - the latter photo portrays a city
suburb in terminal decline, with only a fleeting reminder of its
heyday in the form of Cox's Stack. The lack of smoke emanating from
it seems rather symbolic!
In any case, I'm quite pleased with the results, and will be trying out more photos like these. If anyone has any suggestions, just let me know.
